VIDEO: Real-Time Revision 18 – How to Pace Scenes for Maximum Tension

Pacing can mean a lot of different things, but today we’re looking at using sentence length to heighten the tension of certain scenes. I tend to use longer, more formal sentences when the tension is low and characters have time to think more deeply about things. But, when the tension is high and danger is at hand, I like to write short, choppy sentences that suggest more of a stream-of-consciousness thinking in a moment of panic or fear. In this week’s Real-Time Revision, you’ll see how I go about creating this tension on a sentence level.
