What is story? Conflict!
This is a call and response that I’ve taught my Creative Writing students because it’s so integral to telling a compelling story. If there isn’t something at stake in every scene of your story, your reader gets bored and could check out. Even though I teach this over and over again, I occasionally find places in my own writing where I forget this important lesson. In this week’s Real-Time Revision, I look at a scene in my current work-in-progress where I didn’t follow my own advice and talk through how I’ll go about fixing it.
I also briefly explore a rhetorical device called polysyndeton that I occasionally use as a sort of hyperbole. It’s a fun technique to play with that might find a place in your writing, too!
